Colls humble the champions

NW Counties Round-up

ATHERTON Collieries had the result of the day at Alder House, humbling the newly-crowned Division One champions Trafford with a 3-1 win.

Colls look like ending the season on an encouraging note. Although it was only their third win since Christmas, they have taken four points off the Manchester club, who went into the game having won their last 18 games.

But the Atherton men had to battle back after Scott Metcalfe put the visitors ahead with an 18-yard shot on 34 minutes.

Colls full back Mike Waterworth levelled in the 58th minute with a spectacular 25-yard strike.

David Holt swivelled with his back to goal from six yards to put the hosts ahead 10 minutes later, and he struck again with a 90th-minute tap-in.

In Division Two, Daisy Hill went down 2-1 at home to Stone Dominoes. Burne put the visitors ahead on 29 minutes, and Brown increased their advantage a minute later before Smith pulled one back on 58 minutes.

Division One strugglers Atherton LR beat West Lancashire League side Eagley 3-1 in the quarter-final of the Bolton Hospital Cup.

Rob Findlow lobbed the keeper in the 15th minute to give Eagley the lead.

Their joy lasted only five minutes, however, as River Humphreys cut in from the right before firing home.

Matt Eckersley put Rovers in front with a header before Chris Quirk scored with another textbook lob over Eagley keeper Andy Leece midway through the second half.

LR now face Breightmet United or Stoneclough in the semi-final.
