Sir, I took my 10-years-old son and five-years-old daughter to watch one of our Atherton councillors, Mark Aldred, being made Mayor recently.

Why are guns different?

SIR, In reply to Robert Gray's letter (Journal May 21) about taking up shooting, it amazes me that people are not allowed to carry bombs, not allowed to carry knives but it appears totally acceptable and legal to be able to carry one of the most lethal weapons known to man.

Metro for one, Metro for all

SIR, The transport minister announces with great flourish the awarding of over a £1billion funding for Greater Manchester Transport including new Metro lines for east and south, but again nothing for western Manchester beyond Eccles. Instead he announces again funding for a Busway to Leigh that should have been built over 10 years ago.
