I CAN assure people that cycling on the pavement is an offence under the Highways Act.

I have complained to my councillors on two occasions and on the second they referred my complaint to the police.

However, the reply suggested to me that they had no interest in taking action.

As the lady said in your paper, you can be fined £350 for throwing a cigarette butt on the ground while cyclists break the law and put the safety of the people of Leigh at risk without penalty.

You walk on the narrow pavements of Leigh Bridge at your peril.

Drivers also have to put up with cyclists crashing red lights and travelling up one-way streets in the wrong direction. On one occasion I saw a cyclist ride over Leigh Bridge on the road in the wrong direction.

You do not have to spend long in the town centre to see such lawlessness.

What is badly needed in Leigh is enforcement of the law to prevent accidents to drivers, pedestrians and cyclists themselves.

The occasional blitz on Leigh town centre with fixed penalty notices as dished out to erring motorists should do the trick.
