IT is very obvious to all road users that the council has succumbed to pressures from the green lobby and increased the numbers of traffic lights, speed bumps, cycle lanes, bus lanes and other so-called traffic calming measures by more than 40 per cent in the past two years.
This has been done at enormous expense to local tax payers when the number of cars on the roads has not increased, according to government figures.
Every motorist on business or pleasure will also tell you that if you visit Leigh or travel down the East Lancashire Road on a regular basis your journey times have increased by up to 10 minutes over the past two years.
Also, several times every day the roads become gridlocked, causing unnecessary traffic pollution and the use of an extra five litres of fuel per car, per week.
This is due entirely to new traffic calming measures imposed to promote a new environmentally-friendly guided busway that nobody wants or will ever use.
I feel it’s about time someone in authority stood up for Leigh tax payers and car users against what can only be described as a deliberate policy of ‘anti-car’ measures which are ripping the heart out of our town and businesses.
