OUR picture of the week is of the Duchess of Sutherland steam train on the Chat Moss line near the Astley level crossing.

It is one of only a few steam trains on the main railway network since restrictions were put in place in February after a charter company that was violating safe working practices left most services cancelled.

The picture of the train bound for Edinburgh from Manchester Victoria was taken on March 19 by photographer John Stirzaker, 56, from Wycombe Drive, Astley, who has worked for numerous music magazines and covered events for the Army.

John said: “It’s so great to see a blast from the past in the modern era.

“My first picture in 1967 at the age of seven was of a steam train, and though I don’t get to take pictures of them as often as I used to I love taking them if I can get the shot right.”
