I AM of the old-fashioned view that pavements are for people and cars and bicycles should use the road.

Living close to Tyldesley Primary School, we are subjected to thoughtless parking and driving on a daily basis.

I had become immune to the cars ignoring the 20mph limit and the constant parking of vehicles on the pavements, but I recently witnessed something that angered me and has made me determined to stamp out thoughtless parking.

A young mother was having to negotiate around cars parked where she should have been free to walk. She had a pushchair and another severely disabled child was following in a powered wheelchair.

They had to drop off the pavement and walk in the middle of the road before rejoining the pavement.

The mother had to leave the pushchair while she helped the other child, all while motorists sped past in their haste to get to work.

To make matters worse, the police say it is not their problem, and Wigan Council’s highway department seems less than interested.

It will be everybody’s problem if this thoughtless driving and parking is not stopped, because somebody is going to be killed or severely injured.

I implore the authorities, police and council to enforce the speed limit and stop thoughtless parking on pavements, before it is too late.
