THIS picture of a yellowhammer bird was taken by Leigh Ornithological Society chairman David Shallcross.

The 69-year-old from Atherton, who now lives on Surrey Avenue in Leigh, snapped the shot at one of the few pockets of suitable habitat for the endangered species.

That is the oasis between Howe Bridge and Hindsford in south Atherton, which is steadily being eroded for housing.

David said: “The yellowhammer, once a familiar sight and sound around our fields and hedgerows, is now sadly in serious decline as we as a nation continue to remove hedgerows and feeding habitat from our shrinking countryside.

“Within a short time this stunning bird will be no longer present.”
