THE vicar of Leigh had this row of Church Passage houses built in the late 1800s.

Vicar Joseph Stanning bought the House of Correction pub on the north side of the parish church in 1880.

He then had these four prestigious houses built at the site in 1897, with one serving as the vicarage from 1948 to 1959.

That changed when the present vicarage was built.

The houses were demolished in 1961 in preparation for a new indoor market, which was built in 1968.

A Netto store delivery yard was built the year after the market was demolished in 1989.

The site now houses the town centre Asda store.
