Strangeways Prison is now called HMP Manchester
ATHERTON Women’s Institute thoroughly enjoyed its recent meeting when Andy Platt came to speak about his role as a prison officer.
It was a fascinating insight into life at Strangeways, which was renamed HMP Manchester after the riots.
He was awarded the MBE in 2009 by Prince Charles for services to the prison service.
Atherton congratulated itself on obtaining third in the Lancashire Federation WI show and all the ladies who entered were given a round of applause.
