I AGREE with all the points made in MT Colgan’s letter in the Journal.

The people of Astley have had enough. I think a vote of no confidence should be registered against the Wigan councillors.

They were voted in to look after communities, not destroy them.

It appears that anyone who applies for planning permission in the Wigan area gets it.

It looks like the council sees it as more money in the pot, and it doesn’t seem to matter what residents think.

We were told that the guided busway would reduce traffic on the roads.

I would challenge members of the council to stand outside The Bulls Head pub on Manchester Road in Astley from 3pm to 6pm on any day during the week.

This road is absolutely chaos during the working week at these times.

A few weeks ago my wife and I wanted to cross this road in the dark at 5pm.

This road is a death trap at these times and requires a pedestrian-controlled crossing.

I am disabled and it took nearly half-an-hour to get across the road. I think the same can be said about Elliott Street at these times.

So I think what we were told about the guided busway has not worked.

I think the council should think about building more major roads, not houses, and make our area safer.

The estate between Manchester Road and the East Lancashire Road, Brook Drive, Manor Road, has been turned from a quiet estate to a race track by vehicles taking a short cut to avoid some of the traffic jam at rush hour.

This is an accident waiting to happen.

Building more houses is not going to cure this problem.

Give us more major roads.

Mike Worden, assistant director for planning and transport at Wigan Council, said: “We have ambitious plans to improve the borough’s infrastructure, including the building of new roads which will improve the connectivity from the east to the west.

“We are working with our partners in Greater Manchester to ensure that significant investment in our transport links is delivered through the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework.

“The sites identified in the framework will help deliver a new route on the East Lancs Road and a route through to the M61 from Gibfield.

“The Leigh guided busway has proved highly successful with passenger figures reaching more than 4,000 a day.”
