I AM sorry to say that Wigan Council – who I very recently promoted in the press and by means of two videos due to its involvement in a wonderful Greater Manchester home improvement insulation scheme – got things very wrong in terms of Formby Hall.
Formby Hall is a vibrant, most needed, well-loved, purpose-built community asset that should have been supported, helped and perhaps even gift-funded by the council due to its wonderful contribution to the mental health and wellbeing of the community.
It was used by dance clubs, brass bands, a theatre group, for school-based shows, talent contests, as a wedding reception, for dinners, group meetings, as a training sport venue, by clubs and societies of all types, for plays, shows, dances and by pop groups and bands.
However I am led to believe that the supposedly caring council, seemly without a care, pulled the rug from underneath the community, choosing to take it off them and then sell it off for a song – a figure so low one wonders ‘hang on a minute, what about its market value?’.
So I decided, after much thought, to take part in some direct action in Atherton on Saturday, December 17, as did other like-minded people.
This was my first banner-type protest and I am pleased I did it.
However I have received flak ever since, which is very upsetting.
Well done to all who took part in highlighting what I say has been an appalling let-down to a community by the council, who should know better.
A council which professes to serve them with a caring attitude has not been very caring when it comes to this particular subject.
