ONCE again the illegal activities of some irresponsible cyclists have featured in the letters to the Journal.

And they will continue to do so unless some positive action is taken.

My experiences make me think the police are not interested, even though I am led to believe that they have received training in the issuing of fixed penalty notices.

But when did you last see a police officer or PCSO in Leigh town centre?

It is ironic that in the same edition of the Journal there was a story about someone being fined £200 for discarding a cigarette butt in Lord Street.

Much as I hate litter, I do not feel physically threatened by it.

It is all very well installing cycle lanes but you can see cyclists riding on the pavement on St Helens Road with a cycle lane a few feet to their right.

And the notices around the bus station are widely ignored.

I have seen a cyclist doing wheelies outside the market hall.

In response to a complaint to MP Andy Burnham, he replied that Wigan Council’s partnerships and safeguarding team was considering the implementation of a public spaces protection order for Leigh town centre, but I do not know if this has happened.

Meanwhile I simply do not feel safe on the streets of Leigh.
