HOW emphatically chuffed I was to read in the Journal that Wigan Council is going about its business in its usual wholly democratic and transparent way.
After a public consultation, no doubt online – I can’t remember being asked, can you? – and against the wishes of those who were asked the council has decided to go to three-weekly bin collections.
I suppose that is democracy for you, plenty of everything that the majority don’t want.
When you have a council with one party power no-one in that party wants to rock the boat and vote for what the constituents (voters) want in case they are seen as the naughty one and jeopardise their turn at being mayor.
Talking of which, an area where substantial savings could be made would be to cart the mayor from one function to another in one of those little Fiat 500s instead of the extortionately expensive limousine employed at the moment.
But as my old dad used to say, once they have got your vote, forget it.
All politicians are the same.
