Old crossing was just fine

SIR, Whose idea was it to replace the pelican crossing outside Leigh library with one at the Lord Street/Market Street junction?

The old crossing has worked admirably for many years, and was, in effect, two separate crossings divided by the central refuge.

This meant traffic on one side of the road kept moving while the other side was stopped. Also, if traffic approaching from the Atherton direction was stopped, traffic approaching from the Turnpike junction could turn right into Lord Street.

Now we have one crossing the full width of a very wide road. When a pedestrian presses the button, everything comes to a standstill. Traffic backs up through the turnpike junction, to the bus station, as vehicles waiting to turn right into Lord Street are stopped by the red crossing light .

When the light changes to green the entrance into Lord Street is blocked by oncoming traffic. What is needed is a central refuge as before, or a filter light to allow traffic to turn right into Lord Street.

Over to you, local authority.

Mr. J. Lowe.

(address supplied) Leigh.
