SIR, I gave up driving some years ago, partly because I no longer needed a car to get to work, partly because I wanted to avoid the cost of motoring and partly because of deteriorating eyesight.
The change meant finding a different way of getting around. At the time I saw two alternatives. One was to use public transport and the other was to walk. Both had disadvantages.
Using public transport meant waiting for buses in all kinds of weather and hoping they would be on time. Walking meant that journey times were much slower. However, I've recently realised that there was a third option and that was to buy a bike.
Apart from the initial cost it would be free and it would be much quicker than walking.
I would be able to ride my bike on pavements and travel in any direction regardless of any restrictions which applied to motorists.
I would be able to get around town much quicker as well because I could ride my bike in pedestrian areas.
I'm looking forward to getting my bike and enjoying my newly discovered freedom, free from any restrictions and rules which apply to other road users.
