SIR, I question councillors' wisdom in welcoming a multimillion pound development project to improve what one of them described to me recently as the iconic Leigh library.
It will be replaced by a glass and steel box, undoubtedly, and regrettably designed by architects of the ilk of those whose strange aesthetic judgement has already been inflicted upon long suffering Leigh inhabitants.
I refer, of course, to such examples as the new school in Windermere Rd., the grey, forbidding residential block in Lord St., dubbed locally as "Cellblock H" and the unfinished structure in Chapel St.
In times of recession, when wages and public services will be cut in an attempt to reduce our country's enormous debt and maintain our threatened international credit rating, councillors would, perhaps, be better advised to welcome an enquiry into their colleagues' claims for expenses.
