SIR, I wish to underline the need to clarify details of witness statements for the establishment of a village green in Westleigh.
Mr K P Lawson indicates evidence of use currently lodged was 'insufficient' and suggests 'inhabitants from any locality who have indulged as of right in lawful sports and recreation on the land' may make witness statements.
As I understand the rules for the establishment of a village green witnesses must have been local or visited someone locally or been a member of a local team.
When attempting to obtain village green status for Wesley Guild at Pennington in 1996, a witness who had lived in Atherleigh failed to mention it was when visiting relatives in Pennington that use was made of the land.
At the subsequent inquiry that statement was used against the application as not being local.
Please, please check before lodging statements with the borough.
