A FAMILY camping holiday in France is something that had never really appealed to me.

I feared the nightmare scenario of drunken teenagers, cramped, soggy tents and being stranded with nothing to do.

After all, who wants to be camping in a field when there are family-friendly hotels available on huge leisure complexes?

Well, I’m now happy to admit I was totally wrong. My family and I are totally sold on the camping idea after a fantastic holiday at the La Baume Eurocamp parc on the beautiful French Riviera.

This wasn’t a tent in a field – this was five star camping. Our home for the week was a beautiful three-bedroomed air conditioned mobile home on a stunning plot surrounded by trees. It had a modern kitchen and bathroom along with a double bedroom and two singles.

At night, we enjoyed barbecues and wine on our very own wooden terrace as we watched the sun go down.

My wife and two children – aged three and seven – could not have been happier. From the moment we arrived, they were enjoying themselves to the full.

For the kids, there was a magnificent pool complex with a three-lane slide, a lagoon pool, a split-level covered pool, Jacuzzi and toddler pool.

Most of the time, we were happy to sit back and enjoy a glass of wine as the kids splashed around in the water.

But for the more energetic, there is plenty to do. You can enjoy a number of activities including archery, football, water polo and tennis. Bicycles are also available to hire and a great way of seeing the local area.

The site is lively and there is plenty to do. You can wind-down at one of two bars, a restaurant, or make the most of the on-site takeaway.

La Baume is close to the historic town of Frejus and if you fancy checking it out, there is a regular bus service outside the camp entrance. Several beautiful beaches are just a short bus ride away.

We did spend one day at the beach but, to be honest, there was plenty on offer at the site to keep us all happy.

We arrived at the park by train from Paris but there are regular flights to Nice. Another option is to hire a car and drive to the parc
