WHEN it comes to morris dancing a team from Atherton is the most successful in the north west.

Hag Fold Morris Dancers celebrated its success in style at the annual presentation night at Formby Hall.

It marked the dance group’s 35th anniversary and a season when every one of its seven teams won a troupe of the year title.

Proud trainer Wendy Lewis, who helped found the elite group, said: “We won 28 championships and finished the season with a clean sweep last month at Pontins Championships in Southport.

“I have 100 members and we practice in Hag Fold Community Centre on Mondays and Wednesdays.

“It’s a great place to be, community-based, and a disciplined, healthy hobby that keeps youngsters off the streets and out of trouble.

“All the girls are very competitive, and I can’t believe I’m still here after 35 years.

“We have been the most successful team in the north west.

“We class ourselves as the Manchester United of morris dancing.”

To mark Hag Fold Morris Dancers’ 35th anniversary a masquerade ball celebration is being held on February 9 at Leigh Miners Welfare Institute for current and former dancers.
