THE first round of bidding for grants to commemorate the First World War has begun.

Community groups, schools and voluntary organisations can apply for a grant of up to £1,000 from a special centenary fund set up by Wigan Council.

The council hopes to fund projects which will raise awareness of the centenary of the start of hostilities across the borough and to ensure as many residents get involved as possible.

Head of leisure and culture at Wigan Council, Penny McGinty said: “The war had a massive impact on the borough and we hope that by giving local groups money to plan their own projects we will ensure we commemorate it in a way that is truly meaningful.”

There will the opportunity to apply for funding every year of the centenary up until 2018.

Email p.dandy@wigan.gov.uk for an application form and the deadline for applications is 5pm on May 30.
