VISITORS to St Philip’s Church in Atherton pinned poppies to a display to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War.
The 328 pupils from St Philip’s Primary School also added a flower as a mark of respect to those people who died. The church, on Crosby Street, which is also celebrating its centenary year, held a heritage weekend to mark the occasion.
There were exhibitions featuring information about the soldiers whose names appear on the village’s memorial plaque as well as photographs and church registers so visitors could find out about the births, marriages and deaths that have been recorded over the past 100 years.
