A MAN who used to smoke 50 cigarettes a day is hoping to inspire others to give up.

Robert Parr, 40, from Leigh, had been smoking about 50 roll-ups a day for more than 20 years before he was referred to a Stop Smoking Service eight months ago.

Although sceptical at first, having recently lost family to cancer, he agreed to give it a try and attended evening appointments at Leigh Walk-In Centre with adviser Sue Margetts.

He was so motivated that he quit the following day and has not smoked since.

He said: “I am feeling so much better now I have quit and feel I can perform my job better. I can breathe better and taste food better. I don’t smell anymore and I feel fresher.”

He chose to use a mouth spray, which delivers nicotine to the brain within 60 seconds. The adviser also discussed routines, behaviour change and coping strategies. He initially attended weekly appointments and was motivated by having his carbon monoxide levels taken as it shows the immediate benefits of quitting smoking.

Mr Parr added: “I wouldn’t have done it without Sue, she has been so supportive. I would recommend getting support to anyone interested in quitting smoking.”
