FIREFIGHTERS rescued a 17-year-old girl from a house fire in Leigh.

Crews from Leigh and Hindley were called at about 5.52pm yesterday evening to a fire in a terraced house in Wigan Road, Leigh.

A 15-year-old girl who was in the house at the time had escaped through the rear of the three storey property but the 17-year-old girl was trapped in the first floor rear bedroom.

Watch Manager Mick Callan said: “The house was heavily smoke logged which prevented the girl from escaping the property.

"The North West Fire Control operator that took the call was very professional, constantly talking to her to keep her calm and determine her exact location in the building, this meant that on arrival the crews in breathing apparatus could quickly locate and rescue her and then administer oxygen therapy.”

Firefighters used two hose reels and a positive pressure ventilation fan to deal with the fire, caused by a fault in the mains electrical intake.

Both girls declined hospital treatment.
