A DIPLOMAT, historian and adviser to three Prime Ministers visited Leigh’s Bedford High School to chair a Question Time style event.

Sir Stephen Wall visited the school as part of the national Speakers for Schools programme and chaired the event which was all about the UK’s relationship with Europe.

The former ambassador to Portugal, who has travelled the world as a member of the Diplomatic Service, spoke to Year 11 students and members of Bedford’s Alumni Association about his life, work and the importance of Britain’s role within the European Union.

Sir Stephen said: “The young people here today will be asked to vote in a referendum on our future in the EU a few years from now and it is important that they make an informed choice.

“I have been really pleased with the way the students have listened so intently during the session and the questions they have asked were intelligent and insightful.”

The packed session began with Sir Stephen asking students about their attitudes towards the European Union and a show-of-hands to determine who’s in and who’s out.

After this the man who served five Foreign Secretaries and advised Prime Ministers Jim Callaghan, John Major and Tony Blair, spoke about the history and creation of the European Union following World War Two.

He also went into detail about Britain’s membership of the EU, how and why we joined and some of the benefits the nation enjoys from being part of it.

The session ended with questions from the students which ranged from Sir Stephen’s biggest achievements and proudest moments through to his thoughts on the future of Britain and the EU.

Head teacher Helen Philips said: “Attracting a speaker of Sir Stephen Wall’s calibre is a real coup for our school.

“We are delighted that he has been able to share his story with our students. His session has given everyone who attended plenty to think about.”

“Our students will play an important role in the future of their own communities and the wider world in which they live.”
