LEIGH Harriers' athletes ran outstandingly well when representing Wigan schools in the Greater Manchester Schools' cross country championships at Marple.

They won a gold, a bronze and four silver medals plus a team silver - and four runners qualified for next month's English schools' championships at Leeds.

Eleven years-old Shannon Johnson won her first Greater Manchester title in the Year 7 girls race after a titanic battle with club mate Bethany Jones over the 3,000 m course.

Shannon took the lead in the last 500m and Bethany was runner-up. Ashley Kearsley finished 10th, Georgina Leck 2oth and Lauren O'Malley 25th to help the team take silver.

Richard Powell once again showed great potential finishing third in the 3km race.

Laura Riches ran an excellent race to earn silver in the year 8/9 girls over 4km. In the girls' year 10/11 over 5km Amy Riley earned a well deserved silver.

Lauren Howarth won silver over a 5km course in the senior girls class, losing out to arguably the country's best runner in this age group.
