LIBRARY staff in Leigh went on strike to protest against new working hours.

Unison members picketed outside Leigh Library yesterday in protest at new contracts which they say they have only signed under protest and in fear of losing their jobs.

A Unison steward said: "We all signed new contracts because we were told if we didn't we would be considered to have resigned."

Trade union members' main concern is the loss of pay enhancement for working unsociable hours as a five day, from seven, rota is introduced including weekend working.

Under the old contract staff who worked weekends were paid overtime rates.

The union steward explained: "The library service is moving towards more flexibility but there will be no enhancement for working weekends."

Rodney Hill, Chief Executive of Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, said: "We are very disappointed by this action.

"The implementation of new terms and conditions is an investment by the Trust because we believe passionately that it will improve access to libraries for people across our borough.

"A high percentage of our staff will be either better off or at least on equal pay."
