BOTH Golborne RL teams christened their new kits, supplied by Ozz Sports, with victories.

The first team won18-15 against St Cuthbert's and the A' team 26-14 against Pilkington Recs in the NWC shield semi-final.

Golborne took the first set of six to the Cuthbert's line with both Ryan Kelly and Craig Parr tackled short and a cricket score was on the cards. Cuth's regrouped and responded in style, driving Golborne back up field and were rewarded for their endeavours four minutes in with a converted try by their full back under the uprights.

Golborne responded on fifteen minutes, Timmins, Irvine and Carl Kelly making valuable ground in their own half. Andy Simms put a low kick through on the last tackle and followed up to collect the rebound off a Cuthbert's player, beat two players and put Craig Parr for an unconverted try.

Cuthbert's played some good rugby against the wind throughout the first half scoring two more tries to make the score 14-4 at half time and there is no doubt that if they had carried on playing in the same manner the game was theirs for the taking. Unfortunately they went into self-destruct mode giving away needless penalties rather than playout the tackle count.

Golborne were back in contention four minutes into the second half, Nathan Bell and Tommy Smith making valuable yards and young hooker Stuart Arkwright picking the ball up at acting half, five yards out and driving low to score.

Ten minutes into the second half Nathan Bell took a smart off load from Stuart Naylor to break the line and be tackled short by the Cuthbert's stand off who stopped the quick play the ball, resulting in a penalty to Golborne. From the penalty Naylor was stopped short and Arkwright held up over the line. On moving back the ten yards, Ryan Kelly hit hard at the line and from the play the ball Arkwright passed to Tommy Smith before Andy Simms put in a sweet pass to Gareth Dickinson for Golborne to draw level.

Cuth's regained the lead five minutes later with a drop goal.

No one needed to tell youngsters from Golborne that their opponents were not up to 80 minutes of constant pressure.

Paul Johnston made a brilliant weaving run only to be halted by a high tackle resulting in a penalty on 66 minutes, scored by Bell.

Bell again was involved in the last score of the game, breaking tackles and offloading to Pilling, who went down unopposed as if shot. Johnston and Irvine took the ball to the line before a high shot was put on Carl Kelly resulting in the penalty to make the score 18-15.
