AT the age of 95 Tommy Sale looks forward to the sound of the Journal dropping through his letterbox.

For more than 80 years the Leigh Centurions Honorary Life President has figured prominently in the Journal over those years.

His links with Leigh RLFC began as a 10-year-old, operating the scoreboard at the old Mather Lane ground, and he was Leigh’s first post-war team captain.

He had a stint at Widnes, playing in the 1950 Challenge Cup final, but returned to the club in various spells as second-team coach, secretary, director, groundsman and timekeeper.

Former Leigh St Peter’s School head Tommy, who received an MBE for his dedication to rugby league, said: “I wish the Journal all the best on its birthday and for the future. The Journal has been good to me and the club over the years.”
