WHEN the Journal of September 22, 1944, came off the press it marked the 4,000th edition of the publication.
But the news was a mixture of sadness and elation in this wartime publication. While some families in Leigh and Atherton were delighted to be reunited with their repatriated loved ones, it was a sadder tale for others, with photographs of other servicemen who had been wounded, taken prisoner or reported missing or killed.
