A COMMUNITY theatre is putting on more shows this year as it looks to build on a highly successful 2016 which saw record ticket sales.

The Turnpike Community Theatre has added an additional production to its 2017 schedule and says its line-up of family shows offers something for everyone.

First up is a performance of Roald Dahl's classic story of The Witches in May.

This will be followed by a performance of Willy Russell’s play version of Blood Brothers in September.

The group’s annual family pantomime will take centre stage in November, with Dick Whittington having been chosen this year.

The company's chairman and artistic director Neil Gredecki said: “This is an exciting year for Turnpike with the addition of a third production to the annual schedule, additional performances for each production and the use of such iconic scripts.

“We are keen to perform plays that are varied and appeal to wide audiences.

“Last year saw record ticket sales for the group and we had people waiting in the entrance prior to each production for any returned or uncollected tickets.

“Seats were at a premium.

“We hope that this year is equally as successful and we encourage members of the public to purchase tickets now to avoid disappointment.”

Anyone with an interest in acting is invited to audition for roles in the upcoming productions.

Neil added: "We are always keen to welcome new members to the group and this is what makes Turnpike special.

“We are holding open auditions for The Witches on Thursday, February 23, at the Turnpike Gallery on the Civic Square in Leigh and we do encourage you to attend if you think you have what it takes to tread the boards.”

Following the high demand for last year’s shows, tickets are expected to sell quickly for all three productions.
