THE Labour Party has retained its seat in a close by-election win on Thursday.
The new councillor to serve the Astley and Mosley Common ward is Paula Wakefield who won 46 per cent of the votes with 773 beating runner-up Conservative Party candidate John Stirzaker, who had 604.
UKIP's Allan Hogg scored 185 votes, the Liberal Democrats’ Stuart Thomas had 73 and the Green Party's Andy Prentice got 46.
The seat was made vacant last month when Leigh MP Jo Platt resigned from her councillor duties.
There was a 17.5 per cent turn out for the by-election with the result announced at Leigh Town Hall around 11.15pm.
Paula Wakefield will take her place alongside the other two ward Cllrs Barry Taylor and Christine Roberts.
