A HOSPICE is inviting residents to a volunteers open day in a bid to provide extra help for its services.

Wigan and Leigh Hospice will hold the event at its Woodview Centre on Kildare Street from 10am to 3pm on Tuesday, February 20 with staff and volunteers on hand to discuss the roles available.

People can help out in a number of positions such as reception work, hospice shop work and companionship service in patients' homes.

Manager of the Hospice In Your Home team Rose Davis, said: “We began our companionship service almost three years ago and many patients have found meeting and talking to volunteers to be a great source of comfort to them.

"We are at the point now where more and more patients are requesting this service but we don’t have enough volunteers for them all.

“If you are interested please come to the Open Day to find out more about what the role entails and how very rewarding it is.”

Retail manager Anna Hart added: “The hospice needs to raise £8,700 every day and the shops which are run entirely by volunteers - make a huge contribution towards achieving that.

“By volunteering our volunteers have found that they grow in confidence, meet new people, learn new skills and get a great sense of satisfaction from helping their local community."
