A MAN has been charged with an attempted robbery at a supermarket last week.

Police were called after reports that there had been an attempted robbery at the supermarket on Bolton Road, Atherton.

Martin Paul Smith, 31, of no fixed address, has been charged with attempted robbery and possession of an offensive weapon.

He is accused of attempting to rob money from a woman at the store and possession of a snooker or pool ball as an offensive weapon.

The alleged incident took place at around 8.30pm last Tuesday (March 6).

Smith was due to appear at Wigan and Leigh Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday last week.
