A CONVOY of around 500 bikes, scooters and other vehicles braved the snowy weather conditions on Saturday to deliver Easter Eggs from Leigh to Royal Manchester Children's Hospital.

The 31st annual Ginger's Easter Egg Run saw around 2,000 chocolate treats handed over to children after the convoy set off from Leigh Miner's Welfare Institute at 1pm.

After passing through Leigh town centre and Atherton, the riders got to the hospital at around 2.25pm where they were greeted by children and staff.

The run is organised by Kevin "Ginger" Lawton, who first organised the event in 1987 to improve the perception of bike clubs in the area by helping the community.

Kevin, 64, said: "This year was the first time we have had blizzard-like conditions on our way to the hospital which was tough for everyone to ride in.

"Due to the weather there was not as many people who could make it on the day but we still had around 500 which is great.

"The staff at the hospital were brilliant as always and it was nice to see the children who greeted us despite how hazardous it was outside.

"When we got there the sun was shining as well."

The fun-filled day also included prizes awarded in different categories such as Best Lambretta, Best Motorcycle and Best Vespa.

Riders travel from across the UK to take part in the event and many of them arrived in Leigh on the day before with Kevin being one of them who made his journey from Lincoln where he lives.

An event with a DJ was held at Leigh Miners Welfare Institute on Friday night to entertain them.

On Saturday, a range of stalls were set up selling a range of items such as bike merchandise.

The Kirkby Road venue also hosted a party for the convoy when they returned from the run.

Kevin reserved praise for the club and everyone who helped out with the organisation.

He added: "I would like to thank everyone who took part this year and the generous Easter egg donations that have been made to us.

"On our way to the hospital there were people stopping us to give us eggs they had bought which was great to see."

Kevin also thanked Taylor Drilling Services for allowing the company to use one of its vans to transport the eggs to the hospital.

Matty Higginson, who works for the business and drove the van, was also instrumental in gathering donations from businesses.

The Bike Marshals company accompanied the convoy on their journey for safety reasons as well.

The 32nd Ginger's Easter Egg Run will take place on April 6, 2019.
