EXCITEMENT is growing for a new cup which will be contested by Warrington’s Cheshire League football teams in the new season.

The Warrington Premier Cup, sanctioned by the FA and sponsored by CK Goalkeeping, will feature the likes of Daten, Eagle Sports, Grappenhall Sports, Moore United and Orford FC.

Organisers say the competition is born out of Cheshire League clubs’ omission from the Warrington and District League’s number one knockout the Guardian Cup, which has in the past invited entries from sides outside of the league but within a 15-mile radius of the Town Hall’s golden gates.

Warrington and District League officials said management committee changes had forced their hand in keeping the Guardian Cup in-house next season.

Workload for members of the league’s committee is being streamlined following a number of retirements, with the search for a fixtures secretary and treasurer currently ongoing.

Meanwhile, Liverpool County FA have named the Warrington and District Football League as its Charter Standard League Of The Year.

Explaining the judges’ decision making, a LCFA report described ‘a forward thinking league that works to improve its standards’.

It continued: “This league currently has 70 teams participate; a figure that has been maintained year upon year.

“The Warrington and District Football League promotes the Respect campaign and will be looking to establish an under-19 division to provide a stepping stone to open age football.

“The league is also hoping to set up a few veterans’ leagues and include a programme for nurturing young referees.

“Many teams have joined the Warrington and District League following their original league’s collapse.

“Over 20 clubs have joined and the league has helped them make the transition. As a league it is committed to maintaining standards and offering football for all.

“The league has been in existence for over 110 years and has progressed with the times; something it continues to do whilst working with the local community and charities.”
