A PLAQUE and memorial garden have been installed to celebrate the life of a woman who was instrumental in the building of a community centre.

Susan Marsh, who lived on Spa Road in Atherton, launched a petition in 1971 at the age of 21 and asked children to gather signatures to create a centre in Hag Fold.

After gaining support from the public, the Hag Fold Community Centre, was opened in 1976.

Susan died suddenly aged 30 in 1980.

On Friday, her family, friends and supporters from the 1970s went to the site she helped to set up, now known as “The Bridge” at Dorset Road Community Centre.

“The Bridge” chair Norman Bradbury delivered a speech about Susan’s background in which he praised the work she carried out for the community.

He also thanked a number of organisations and members of the public for raising money for the project.

Susan’s daughter Vicky Marsh and her partner Gareth Gregory were given a special mention for their work on the memorial garden.

Young people from “The Challenge on the National Citizens Service 2018” also helped to design the garden.

Wigan Council chief executive Donna Hall unveiled Susan’s memorial plaque.
