A PUB is in the running to win a national competition.

The Rope and Anchor pub on Bolton Old Road in Atherton has been selected to represent MP Chris Green's constituency for the Parliamentary Pub of the Year award.

Mr Green asked residents to vote for their favourite pub in the Bolton West and Atherton area.

Thousands of votes were received via Facebook and email with The Rope and Anchor receiving the most.

Mr Green said: “It has been fantastic to see so many local residents getting behind their local pubs throughout this competition.

“The Rope and Anchor is thoroughly deserving of Bolton West and Atherton’s nomination, with their brilliant contributions to our local community.

“It was fabulous to visit the team at the Rope and Anchor and congratulate them on their nomination and I look forward to hearing about their progress in the Parliamentary Pub of the Year competition.”

As well as people voting for the pub, punters also praised its events, facilities as well as the charity and voluntary work staff carry out for causes.

The pub's friendly atmosphere was another major reason why people decided to vote for the pub.

There were a number of pubs which finished runners-up in the competition.

The Beaumont in Ladybridge, the Rosehill Tavern in Westhoughton and the tail and Ales in Horwich were among the name of the pubs which were in with a chance of being selected.

The winner of the competition is expected to be announced in January.
