UNION flags have been put on display in Atherton town centre ahead of Armistice Day on Sunday.

Councillors Stuart Gerrard and Jamie Hodgkinson, along with resident James Paul Watson, have put more that 60 flags up outside business buildings to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

A commemorative garden is also set to be unveiled by the town's Royal British Legion branch at Atherton Park on Cambridge Street and Hamilton Street to a group of volunteers on Saturday ahead of the Remembrance Day parade.

Cllr Stuart Gerrard said: "It's great to see the community and businesses coming together to show their appreciation of the sacrifices made by our forefathers 100 years ago.

"The flags not only look fantastic but also show our appreciation to the armed forces."
