A WASTE amnesty is set to take place tomorrow, Saturday, as part of plans to clean up Atherton.

Residents will be able to go to Dorset Road Community Centre from 8.30am to 2.30pm to put their rubbish in large containers.

During this time mechanical sweepers will go around the Hag Fold estate to collect rubbish.

Wigan Council workers will be in attendance to give people recycling advice and talk about the impact that fly tipping and dog fouling has on the community.

Atherton councillor Stuart Gerrard said: "This initiative is directed at cleaning up our areas and getting local residents to take pride in the areas they live, and to also educate people on how to recycle properly and more efficiently.

"There is also a chance that unwanted items can be upcycled and reused."

The event has been funded by councillors' Brighter Borough Funding allowance.

Council staff will also hand out refuse items such as bin numbers, dog bags and caddy liners on the day.

Volunteers are also invited to litter pick on the Hag Fold estate during with equipment provided to them on the day.

The council's Streetscene team will collect the rubbish that has been gathered.

There will be mechanical sweepers going around the estate, volunteers who want to help and help clean up their street can do and are most welcome too. All equipment will be provided.
