PLANS are underway to crack down on burglaries and drug-related crimes in Leigh.

The Leigh Neighbourhood Policing Team are working on several operations in the town centre to tackle both of the issues.

Officers are also in the process of finishing preparations to keep shoppers and store workers in the town centre and Parsonage Retail Park safe as Christmas approaches.

Leigh Neighbourhood Sgt Adele Colbourne said: "As always, our hope is that the people of Leigh and all those who come here to shop and work, are safe and enjoy their visit.

"We continue to work with partner agencies to improve our service to the public."

Sgt Colbourne also confirmed the force supported Trading Standards recently regarding the alcohol and tobacco sales which resulted in one premises' licence being surrendered.

Officers have also been working with Wigan Council to see how they can help rough sleepers.

Police were also in attendance at the town's parade to mark the 100th anniversary of the First World War yesterday, Armistice Day.

They will be attending the Christmas Lights switch on event later this month.
