KIND-HEARTED pupils in Runcorn hosted a free afternoon tea for war veterans ahead of Remembrance Sunday.

Lyla Pitt, 12, and Faye McGuinness, 11, pupils at Ormiston Bolingbroke Academy in Barnfield Avenue, wanted to say thank you to the older members of their community.

They set up a free event on Saturday at Macy's Cafe in Grangeway community centre after their school gave them the idea of participating in extra-curricular fundraising activities.

Lisa Franey, Lyla's mum, said: "They designed a flyer for the afternoon tea and I set up a fundraising page to pay for the food and drinks.

"I took them around to social clubs in the area so they could hand out the information themselves.

"They baked cakes the night before and in the morning they were making sandwiches."

On the day, the girls, along with help from their friend, Carter Stone, took food and drink orders from veterans and Lisa was proud at how confident the youngsters were.

She said: "It was really nice to see something positive from young people.

"They made £179, £85 of which went to Runcorn Veterans Association and they were really grateful.

"It was a pleasure to see."
