THREE borough community organisations are in the running to be awarded funding for a supermarket community grant scheme.

The Homeless Support Project in Leigh, Atherton and Leigh Shelter for Hope and Queens Hall Action on Poverty have all been nominated for Tesco’s Bags of Help scheme.

Customers at Leigh’s Tesco Extra store at The Loom will be able to vote for their chosen group in November and December.

The one with the most votes will be handed £4,000, while second place will receive £2,000 and £1,000 will go to the third most-nominated organisation.

Former Leigh MP and Greater Manchester mayot Andy Burnham said: Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, said: “Tesco’s generous offer of funding for some of our on-the-ground projects working to end the need for rough sleeping by 2020 is to be welcomed.

"This kind of innovative approach chimes perfectly with Greater Manchester doing things differently when it comes to tackling this humanitarian crisis.

"Our response to homelessness and rough sleeping in the city-region has improved dramatically in recent months.

"We have led the way in co-ordinating efforts across the public, private and third sectors, responding proactively to a problem that needs an urgent solution.”

People will be be able to make their vote by using a token given to them at the store’s check out.

The scheme is run in partnership with Groundwork which sees the money raised from the sale of carrier bags awarded to thousands of community projects.
