Every year, we see more and more people trying to outdo each other when it comes to Christmas decorations, but this house in Welling will take some beating.

Archbishop Jonathan Blake, known for presiding over the late Jade Goody's wedding, has set up this zany display with good intentions as he attempts to raise £12,000 to provide a water pump for a village in Gambia.

He told News Shopper that even though this is the 15th year he's run the Christmas lights in Danson Crescent, this year's will be the most exciting as they will be directly helping a specific group of people.

"Because so much money goes to office and staff, we became disillusioned with the bigger charities.

"This way, we will be giving back that confidence to people that the money will go directly to those who need it," he said.

This year, the archbishop got in contact with the charity, Water for Africa, who will help make sure that all of the money raised will go towards the village of Tiaba Nyass.

"We want to provide this village with a solar power, borehole water pump which will completely revolutionise their lives," he said.

Mr Blake said he was inspired to help this particular village after he visited it earlier this year.

"Myself and my sons went to the village and met with their chief.

"The levels of poverty are unimaginable. Unless you go there, you won’t believe it.

"Out of the 890 people living in the village, 400 of these are children so it's so important we do this," he explained.

So far, the online fundraising campaign has raised just over £3,800.

The lights will continue to shine bright every night in the run up to Christmas. However, the archbishop was clear they will be turned off at 10:30pm each night to avoid any complaints from restless neighbours.

"We’ve always been very sensitive to other residents. We turn them off strictly at 10.30. The neighbours have been very supportive," he said.
