A CAMPAIGN to build a statue in Leigh of late Buzzcocks frontman Pete Shelley has attracted strong public support.

An online petition set up by Hindley Green councillor Paul Maiden to have a statue built in Leigh, Pete's hometown, has generated more than 700 signatures.

Pete died at the age of 63 from a reported heart attack two weeks ago in Estonia, where he lived with his death leading to tributes from across the music world.

Resident Paul Lally, who lives in Hindley Green but is from Leigh, contacted Cllr Maiden about the idea after Pete died two weeks ago.

Music fan Paul, 53, who watched the Buzzcocks several times, said: "Pete was an inspiration to me and will be for future generations in my opinion.

"My son Robert is the lead guitarist in the local band The Lottery Winners and they quote him as an inspiration to them.

"I think a statue would be good for the town because it would be a tourist attraction for people visiting.

"I have been in touch with Pete's family and they are supportive about the idea and we have had backing from the community as well."

Cllr Maiden, who is also a music promoter, has organised a punk gig with eight bands playing on January 19 at The Boulevard in Wigan in aid of building the statue.

He said: "Pete should be recognised for his achievements. I was a fan of his music and I think he changed the punk scene and made it easier to listen to and more mainstream.

"It would be great if a statue was made because the public are really behind it.

"When statues of famous people are made they are inspirational."
