PLANS have been submitted to build at the site of a former brewery depot which was closed in February.

An application has been lodged with Wigan Council to build a warehouse on land next to the former Carlsberg brewery depot in Golborne.

The 6,735sqm building would have office space with other features such as allocation for HGV parking and loading bays included in the site plans.

A second application at the Stonecross Park site proposes to build a single-storey 929sqm extension to the existing 10,472sqm warehouse where Carlsberg were based.

The applicants for the development are OXW Catalina (Logistics X) Limited and Stoford Development Limited.

Planning documents prepared by the agent GVA HOW Planning says the development would provide a "premium new unit, thus helping to deliver economic growth and secure long-term jobs and prosperity".

The document states: "A significant number of new full-time jobs would be created during the operational phase.

"The development would offer an interesting and diverse scope of local job opportunities, including jobs in the warehouse as well as the ancillary office.

"In addition, there would be an opportunity to use a number of local firms to assist with the extension and new building which has the potential to give a rise to temporary employment creation.

"Furthermore, there would be an opportunity to potentially use local suppliers for aspects such as ongoing maintenance and security once the facilities become operational."

The agent added that the existing building, which was opened by Carlsberg 20 years ago, is in a "poor state of repair".

Carlsberg's Yew Tree Way depot was one of eight in the country the company closed in a short period of time after deliveries by the brewery were outsourced to DHL Tradeteam.

Back in February, around 150 draymen, warehouse and office staff were led to the nearby Stonecross Table Table pub restaurant by their colleague John Imrie, who played the bagpipes on the way.

Inside, the workers had a final drink together.

A neighbourhood consultation is currently in place for both applications until January 11 with a decision expected to be made in March.
