A FORMER army bomb disposal expert and founder of a young people's activity company has been recognised.

Mike Hamilton, who set up Commando Joe’s which has a base on Meadowcroft Way in Leigh, is set to be awarded an OBE for services to young people.

He was named in the New Year's Honours List.

The 38-year-old served as a commando physical training instructor and bomb disposal expert in the armed forces before establishing his company in September 2009.

Commando Joe's courses aim to develop essential life and character skills for young people and to support teachers and senior leaders.

Dad-of-one Mike said: “There are far more deserving people than me who could be honoured.

"It’s down to the hard work and dedication of my team at Commando Joe’s and the schools we work with."

Commando Joe's receives funding from the Department for Education and works in more than 1,000 schools across the country.

Mike added: "Our vision is to ensure we do not leave any child, teacher, parent and senior leader behind regardless and especially help young people to realise their full potential.

"Everyone should be part of the programme and understand the journey.

"Even if it is a small as saying hello and good morning at the start of each day, or holding a door open with a smile and saying thank you.

"We genuinely believe in modelling positive outstanding behaviours to all."

The company's key partner is the Wise Owl Trust, whose executive principal Sophie Murfin has adopted a seven-point programme called RESPECT which is part of its school ethos and culture.
