LEIGH MP Jo Platt and Atherton representative Chris Green voted against Theresa May's Withdrawal Agreement in last night's crunch House of Commons vote.

The Prime Minister suffered a huge defeat in Parliament as her Withdrawal Agreement on leaving the EU lost by 202 votes to 432.

This is the largest defeat a government motion has suffered in history recorded by Hansard.

In a statement after the vote, Ms Platt said: "This evening I voted along with the majority of MP’s against Theresa May’s Brexit deal because it would not deliver the foundation for growth and prosperity that we need in towns such as ours.

"But despite the chaos and rhetoric we hear this evening, we must remember that on the most important issue facing this country for decades, the greatest priority of this Government, the defining issue of Theresa May’s premiership, she has decisively and resoundingly lost that vote.

"After defeat on an issue of this magnitude, it is hard to see how she could possibly intend to move forward in a constructive way for the country.

"We must therefore move on speedily and unite as a community and as a country.

"After nearly three years of division this Government has totally failed in their duty to bring the country together – instead they have only widened divisions and have made no progress forward – quite literally nothing has changed.

"To move forward will mean compromise on all sides, there will be no perfect solution that satisfies everyone, and it is crucial that we are all clear about that from the start."

Bolton West and Atherton MP Chris Green was one of 118 Conservative politicians that voted against the deal.

In a video released on social media ahead of the vote he said: "I believe it (the deal) seeks to embed the United Kingdom (UK) more into the European Union (EU) intelligence and military structures, and therefore it will take us away from our traditional allies in Canada, USA, Australia and New Zealand and especially our focus in NATO.

"I also believe that for £39 billion we have no guarantees that we're getting anything worth having for it and especially not getting a good free trade agreement with the EU.

"I also believe that it will lead to the break up of our UK. First with Northern Ireland and also give a cause to the Scottish nationalists to further break up our kingdom by taking Scotland out of it.

"I do believe this deal gives the EU everything they want and gives us here very little of what we need.

"The people of the UK did not vote for a deal that looks like this and certainly my constituents did not either."
