LEIGH's MP has defended her stance on Brexit after receiving a flood of emails from residents supporting a no-deal option.

Labour representative Jo Platt is backing her party's policy of refusing to leave the European Union (EU) without making a withdrawal deal before Britain is due to cut ties on March 29.

The Shadow Minister for the Cabinet Office, who voted for the UK to remain in the EU in the 2016 referendum, says there is evidence that not striking a deal would damage the economy and leave towns such as Leigh "a lot worse off".

Ms Platt said: "I am receiving more and more emails from constituents who are advocating for a no-deal scenario in relation to Brexit.

"Let me be clear, I will not support a no-deal Brexit.

"There is sufficient evidence that a no-deal will damage our economy and leave places like Leigh a lot worse off.

"No MP in the country would want that for their constituency and I certainly will actively campaign against it."

Ms Platt also rejected claims she is "betraying" her constituency after 64 per cent of the borough voted to leave the EU.

She added: "The calls by some, that I am somehow betraying my constituency or those that voted leave are well wide of the mark and have no basis in this debate.

"I stood on a manifesto in the 2017 election which respected the referendum result and clearly states 'we will reject no-deal as a viable option'.

"I will continue to keep those manifesto commitments.

"Furthermore, I would like to point out that the leave campaign, on their website after the referendum result was announced, indicated that the UK would have to negotiate a deal. This was very clear."

The MP will be publishing a survey on her website soon for constituents and will send details out in due course.
