A COUNCILLOR has expressed her "delight" after being named on a list which recognises the influence of women in their work.

Cllr Nazia Rehman who has represented Tyldesley for three years, is included on the Northern Power Women (NWP) 2019 Power and Futures List.

She is one of 100 women NWP have recognised in making a difference in their communities and raising awareness of gender equality across the north of England.

Cllr Rehman has been Wigan Council's portfolio holder for resources, finance and transformation since last year with her playing a role in the town hall making financial savings.

She said: "I am very delighted and honoured to be on such a prestigious list. It is wonderful to be on it.

"There are change makers and barrier breakers on the list who are an inspiration.

"I want to dedicate this to the people of Tyldesley. It is them who showed the confidence in wanting me to representing them.

"I am looking forward to the exposure and the platform it will give me to serve our people for the betterment of my community."

Cllr Rehman, 40, also paid tribute to the local authority for its work with giving power to community groups on projects.

As a new member on the list she will be given training to be a mentor among other roles and attend events as a role model.

Founder of Northern Power Women, Simone Roche MBE, said: “I am extremely proud of these role models.

"They are amazing people doing fantastic work and they deserve every bit of recognition.

"Without the women on our Future and Power List it would be impossible for us to do what we do across the North.

"Each person named has played a part in driving forward the NPW agenda and have helped push out the boundaries”

The new entrants will be celebrated at the Northern Power Women Awards when more than 650 guests will attend the Manchester Central Convention Complex Monday, March 18.

The awards will also recognise winners across 10 categories shortlisted from 900 nominations.
