A SEARCH for a bomb was carried out at Leigh Sports Village (LSV) on Friday night.

A caller phoned the stadium to say that there was a bomb inside the arena.

Police were called at around 8.50pm at the end of an Under 23s football match at LSV between Manchester United and Southampton.

A specialist search dog inspected the stadium but no device was found.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed they are investigating the incident as a "hoax threat".

LSV say fans were not evacuated as the incident happened at the end of the game so they were allowed to leave the stadium without any announcements.

An LSV spokesman said: "At the very end of the Premier League 2 game Manchester United U23s and Southampton at Leigh Sports Village, a potential security threat was identified.

"The appropriate action plans were implemented in conjunction with police and agencies and fans dispersed as normal at the end of the game.

"After a thorough investigation, the threat was a false alarm and the stadium is operating as normal."

Police were at the scene until 10.30pm.
